Even though this internship at MCASD is my 4th job/internship, the fear of getting to know the people you work with is always new and different. My first impressions of being on the job....people talk about things I'm not interested in. The art crowd is a very pretentious bunch who love to gawk over the latest dissertations written in a certain art journal, or compare art scenes in Brooklyn over San Francisco. They probably talk about that kinda stuff like I talk about the coolest ted lecture i've just watched, or a new band i heard, or a damn good taco i have to share with the world. But c'mon...a 1.5 hour lecture on lightbulbs? zzzzzzZzzzzZzZzZzZ. I thought a lecture on pavement was bad, but this sunk it to a whole nother level. It's only day one though. There definitely is a big difference between grassroots non-profit art orgs like Freewaves and an institution like the Museum of Contemporary Art in SD. LIke at Freewaves I could eat a taco with my supervisor, and have coffee at her house. People talked to me more and really cared about helping me out. Where the employees at MCASD will treat me like a child and chuckle at my questions.
I'm curious though. I've always wanted to find out what this art world was like. I will be reporting on my latest findings.
In my perfect world, there would exist an institution with Freewaves people, spirit, and intention, in a space like MCASD and with their money too.
Now, how to get the keys out of my locked car...
