In a warwick avenue kinda mood.

Maybe this post has something to do with post-Valentine's Day. Maybe it doesn't. The brits are really stepping up their game with soulful singers like Adele and Winehouse, and Joss Stone. I'll never be able to sing like them. Well, I just watched this music video by Duffy for her song "Warwick Avenue." She gives off a lot of Adele-ish vibes, but she really took her soul to another level, after watching her music video.

Did a little background check, because it appeared to look really genuine, and I found out that that really is Duffy, really crying in her music video, probably about that douche on 'warwick avenue' whom she wrote the song about. That dick.

The director had planned all these other scenes for the video, but stuck with this one shot, in one take.

Did anyone else but me watch this video and feel the urge to cry too? Not really because it was a sad video, but more because a lot of girls try reenacting 'warwick avenue'-type taxi moments and actually feel really good after doing it? I think a lot of girls do...at least the melo-dramatic ones. I have these occasional moments where I'm in my car, no music, and just start tearing up because it feels so refreshing. My emotions are literally being carried out into my tears and away from my body, and it feels so damn good.

Mentally Drained

Today marked the end of Day 1 of TED 2010. It's such an exciting time right now, and I hope the buzz continues for the Los Angeles TED attendees when they return. But I can't deny the heartache I felt as I found myself tearing up the other night when I saw all these amazing TED fellows who looked as young as 25, and wondered why I wasn't even near that point of success yet.

Lately it's been so difficult to get my head wrapped around my ideas and goals, and how to contribute them to society. (Yes, to society; Because I won't settle for anything less.) I've said this to myself and to a few of my mentors, but I feel as though I've been placed on this Earth to do really really big things. Positive things. Inspiring things.

And what's been so frustrating lately is not being able communicate my ideas to other people. Sure I try to, but it doesn't come out the way I hoped it would. I'm having a really difficult time figuring what that idea really is and how it will be realistically implemented.

It's been a mentally draining time for me as I try to reassess my hopes and dreams at 22.

lol.

Clients from Hell

What a simple and awesome website concept. Quoting difficult clients mainly from anonymous designers. I'm sure they have it the worst. Poor designers, having to deal with dumb people on a daily basis.

Some of my fav's:

>> Client: "Needs more WA-WA-WOOM."

>> Client: "What I want you to do with this issue is go outside of the box but stay in the box at the same time."

>> Client: "Hate it. Try again."

>> Client: "The logo looks great, but can we change the address font to Arabic? I need it for my Middle Eastern viewers."

Me: "Actually, Arabic is a name of that font you sent me, it doesn’t actually change the words into another language. I can purchase a actual Arabic font, and figure out how to turn it into Arabic…."

Client: "So New Times Roman doesn’t change the words into Italian?"

Me: "No, Times New Roman is just a standard…"

Client: "Are you sure? Let me call you back after I check Word 2009. I have the newest version, so maybe it only does it in the newer version. I’ll give you a call back later today. Thanks."

End.

Facebook is weird sometimes.

Facebook is weird sometimes. I've got almost 800 friends.
I DEFINITELY don't have 800 friends.

Maybe 20.

But not 800.

The most beautiful sleep.

Looked something like this. I was at the top of a sand tower, overlooking this scenery with a friend. It was quiet. It was sunset, breezy, and quiet.

Hands down one of the best dreams I've ever had.

Why I <3 my dad

If someone were to ask me who my hero is, it would be my dad. I think a lot of my personality comes from him--mainly his exuberance for life, optimism, and love of food and drink.

A 10 minute heart to heart with him just made months and months of confusion and frustration so clear. I've been struggling with patience since I've graduated--rushing things and having unrealistic expectations of where I should be professionally. But I've known this all along. And everyone around me was too nice to tell me what I already knew. I tried to desperately jump from level 1 to 50 at 22 years old. When really, i have to go through steps 2-49 first. My dad said i'd break my back if i keep looking to 50 and not realizing 2-49 first.

I realized that most of this impatience came from things like wanting people to respect me, wanting to do big things with my life, wanting to be financially independent. My dad used another analogy of the freeway system. He said that I keep beating myself over the head, wondering why the 5 doesnt connect to the 101. So I get off the road, go to a liquor store, have a beer and realize I need to take the 60 to get the 101 from the 5. Eureka! Probably the best piece of advice I've ever heard in my life.

Thanks popz.

SO with that said, the next six months are set. Of the three things I'm juggling with right now, one is going to get cut. And I won't regret any of it. The other two--shit.l be lucky I chose you! Mama's going to make you famous!

Awkward Start to 2010

Currently supposed to be "sleeping" right now to fight off this potentially nasty flu. It's day three of the new year and my world around me is hazy, exciting, saddening, tiring, and exhausting. I feel spiritually empty in my heart. I feel caught in the middle at home. I feel stuck everywhere else.

The Conversation I Wish I Had

Currently listening to Getty Museum director, Michael Brand, on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. He's a guest DJ, and I have to say, despite the fact that I've met him once already, this is one conversation I wish I had with him--preferably over an import beer of some sort, and a cigar.

I've been thinking about this idea of developing themed audio guide tours that accompany a series of paintings with a certain soundtrack. That's not to say that these pieces do not have enough integrity to stand on their own--because they should.

*Ugh. Update. Looks like Art Mobs has already thought of that idea. Sick podcasts they're doing for MoMA. Maybe I'll spearhead the LA version! :D
